THE CRISIS ON MAIN STREET: How Washington Continues to Ignore Small Businesses

“THE CRISIS ON MAIN STREET: How Washington Continues to Ignore Small Businesses” is a rallying cry for Small Businesses and Entrepreneurs everywhere. When the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) was enacted by Congress in February of 2009, a mere 0.899% of the funds were directed toward helping Small Businesses. Despite the fact that the Small Business sector employs over 50% of the American population, Big Business and Wall Street got most of the attention from our government during the “Great Recession” (and continues to do so). This is just one example of how Washington has ignored the interests of Small Businesses and Entrepreneurs. Mercantile Capital Corporation is a nationwide commercial lender that specializes in providing SBA 504 loans for owners of small and mid-sized businesses. THE CRISIS ON MAIN STREET was written and narrated by Mercantile’s CEO/Cofounder, Chris Hurn — a serial entrepreneur and outspoken Small Business Advocate — to give Small Businesses and Entrepreneurs a common voice. We are asking that voters who are in favor of job creation make their presence widely known during the mid-term elections. Ask your candidates to expressly state their opinion on small business lending reform, and only vote for those who will loosen the restrictive reins that are hampering job creation in our country. Candidates who do not list small business job creation as a key part of their platform do not deserve your support.

Tax Time

House Chamber, Washington, DC March 12, 2009. Mr. Speaker: Many people were quite relieved when President Obama promised to reduce taxes on 95 percent of Americans. Last week, the President introduced his new budget that depends on a staggering tax increase of .4 trillion over the next ten years. If that fell on all of us, it would come to nearly 000 on an average family of four or 00 per year out of that familys paychecks. So what a relief to hear the Presidents assurances that its only going to be a tax on the rich. Except, its not. As we begin dissecting the Presidents new taxes, its becoming crystal clear that they actually squarely hit the middle class working families who are struggling to make ends meet in the worst economy in a generation. Let me walk you through the reasons that the Presidents new taxes are something that every middle class family should fear. There are about 0 billion of direct tax increases, including a boost in the income tax to nearly 40 percent. Thats the part that the President says will only be on the very wealthy, which he defines as people making 5000 a year or couples making 0000. But when you scratch the surface, you learn that more than half of these folks arent folks at all theyre small businesses. So if you work for or own a small business, chances are that this tax is for you. The rest is coming from increases in business taxes either as direct taxes or as cap and tax fees for carbon dioxide emissions. Cap and tax
