Acer Iconia Tab – In store review – Joseph the Computer Guy
Check out our IM+ iPad 2 Contest entry here: www.youtube.com Today I got a look at the Acer Iconia Tab A500 in my local Corpus Christi Best Buy. (In stores now) Located where the Xoom used-to be, the Acer Iconia Tab now took it’s spot. First impressions? It’s another Android… Running honeycomb… some of the things that came to mind were slow and uninteresting, but none-the-less, I chugged on. Looking at some of the specs on the right-hand-side of the tablet, conveniently located on a sticker, the things you would see advertised are HDMI, Bluetooth, WIFI, and MicroSD, along with the “Wide Viewing Angle” screen. Now, to see if that is true… Screen: Good resolution, pretty crisp, good viewing angle. Body/design: It looks like a big smartphone, even the flash and camera have the same appearance. Speakers are on the opposite side of the screen, facing away from you if you are looking at the screen. Yes, they may be stereo, but it’s useless if it’s on the wrong side of the tablet. Apparently, it’s not too odd for an Android, the Xoom has the same conundrum. Audio came out as if it was facing away from you, and at a relatively louder-than-a-smartphone level, which wasn’t something I liked at all. Very heavy in the hand, don’t expect to hold it “one-handed” cause your whole arm will hate you for it. Thick, thick, and not thin, but only a hair or two thicker than a Xoom. (The BlackBerry PlayBook is really starting to look good right now…) Now, moving on to the buttons. It …
Motorola Xoom – In Store Video Review – Joseph the Computer Guy
Check out our IM+ iPad 2 Contest entry here: www.youtube.com Right after checking out the Acer Iconia Tab, I went straight to the Motorola Xoom. Similar in “Style” and size, they seemed to be perfect competition for each other. First impressions? Looks a lot better than the Iconia Tab, and it’s a bit thinner. Still has the ridiculous back-facing speakers, but at least it doesn’t have the “I’m a big smartphone, hear me roar” oversized Android phone thing going for it. It did feel more solid, with the sheet aluminum feeling going for it. Still doesn’t feel like the solid aluminum that the iPads are made of, but it’s still better than the Acers plastic-like fake metal styling. Only a hair or two lighter than the Iconia tab, and that means it’s a heavy beast. Not that I was expecting it to be as light as the PlayBook or the iPad 2 or anything, but your hand will hurt and be fatigued very rapidly with this device if you hold it with only one hand. Screen: Reminded me of the Iconia tab, and there’s not a real difference between them. OS: Same ole Honeycomb. You wouldn’t expect something so new, to feel so old, so quickly, but the OS is still Android. It’s got the same app marketplace, and this demo unit had Angry Birds on it. It also had the most annoying demo that would pop up and absolutely the worst, or even stupidest, times, even though I’m still using it. One thing that was different, is flash support. This demo unit finally had it. But, that’s not necessarily a good thing …
