#92 – Beer Blog 31 (Hopwerks: Survival Coffee Stout)

The last beer I got from hippykiller1 is a coffee stout by a Portland brewery called Hopwerks Urban. This beer used a very high-quality coffee unlike most coffee beers (with the exception of Kona Brewing’s Coffee Porter). I am joined by my roommate Jon who’s a coffee geek as well as having good knowledge of beer.

Good review. I liked it that you brought your roommate in on this review. It was good to hear a coffee drinker’s perspective on the beer.

  • TheMasterOfHoppets:

Didn’t you already upload this once? :-P

  • yuichituba:

@TheMasterOfHoppets Ya, but YouTube has been really weird and screwy with uploading videos and putting ads. Hopefully I won’t have to deal with stuff like this again.

w/o watching the vid again,i think i originally asked if there was a limit to what u can + 2 beer and how much u can + & still call it a beer?
-i’ve had this debate many x b4,and i take the side of the german purity law;to each his/her own…i guess!

  • yuichituba:

@qchome Oh did you? I think I missed it if you did. What’s your question? Are you asking how much ABV and additions you make to beer until it’s not beer?

  • qchome:

    @yuichituba i am asking if u + coffee 2 beer/if you + cherries 2 beer/if you + chillies 2 beer(and that is only the c’s)is it still beer?
    if yes,how much?if a “beer” has 5% coffee in it…is it still a beer;25%,49%,50%,51%?

  • Chad9976:

gotta love a good coffee beer!

  • yuichituba:

@qchome I don’t know. As long as it tastes like beer and it’s mostly composed of the beer wert.

  • qchome:

@yuichituba dude, there is (obviously)no right or wrong answer…it is just ones opinion.with belgium & germany neighbours…the topic of conversation keeps things interesting!
    proost & prost.

  • TheMasterOfHoppets:

@yuichituba Oh ok. Yeah lets. Btw you two should review Mikkeller Beer Geek Brunch Weasel, brewed with the most excpensive coffee in the world, it is really good!

  • yuichituba:

@qchome I think as long as it uses 100% of its necessary ingredients it’s ok what people do. But if people try so hard to make it taste something other than beer, like milk shake or syrupy soda, then I think it’s stupid. If I want to drink milk shake or soda I would go to McDonalds.

  • AndreR241:

    Ok, it IS broken…

    Thanks for the video!

  • hippykiller1:

This is pretty cool. Nice to see that you had a coffee guy review. Kinda ads to the dynamic factor of your beer blog… Stumptown is nice high quality coffee. I really do miss it. I also miss a wide selection of beer. Japan just isn’t the same…

  • yuichituba:

@hippykiller1 Oh crap! You’re in Japan now!!! I was about to say, can’t you get Stump Town from where you are? I just saw your blog, man. So you’re in Otawara, huh. I’ll read up your stuff to see how things are going. I bet you have a lot of free time, lol. That’s what I heard anyways.
